Joining hands for a sustainable future

UNIVERSITI Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was founded as a not-for-profit private university with a mission to provide quality yet affordable education to all. It is ranked 201-300 in the overall Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2020 following the university’s performance and achievements on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). The award from THE University Impact Rankings 2020 recognises universities across the world for their social and economic impact according to the 17 SDGS outlined by the United Nations.

Strong collaborations with external organisations and educational institutions are valued by UTAR and are among the university’s many approaches to achieving SDGS. Local and international symposiums, forums and conferences are actively organised by the university in collaboration with other researchers. UTAR believes research plays an important role in achieving SDGS while promoting active discussion among researchers for more sustainable outcomes.

For example, the International Conference on Tropical Biodiversity 2018 shed light on the importance of having the right understanding to manage the ecosystem more sustainably for the benefit of all. The conference highlighted biodiversity as being equally important as eco-tourism, citing that it provides different resources for livelihoods, culture and food security. In fact, unsustainable development for the environment may cause an imbalance to the ecosystem, thus resulting in the loss of many precious biodiversity that are important to mankind’s wellbeing – hence the need for the conservation of biodiversity efforts to enable humans and nature to live sustainably.

UTAR’S sustainable efforts and achievements continue to strengthen the role of education as an important key to ensuring sustainability is well understood, taught, practised and achieved for the long term. UTAR strives to ensure that students’ success benefits not only themselves, but also the society and environment in sustainable ways – securing a brighter future for the next generation.
