A PROFESSION in nursing focuses on the care of individual­s, families and communitie­s. It offers job stability, as well as a wide variety of options in relation to work schedules, locations and levels of responsibi­lity. Nurses work together with doctors when providing care and treatment and a nurse can positively impact those put under her care.

In Malaysia, qualified nurses are much sought after by both the public and private sectors. According to the Ministry of Health of Malaysia (MOH) 2018 statistics, there are 106,373 qualified nurses in Malaysia today and this contribute­s to a 1:304 nurse-to-population ratio.

Malaysia needs 130,000 nurses to fulfil the ideal ratio of 1:200 as envisaged by the World Health Organizati­on (WHO).

A nurse may aspire to be a clinical specialist, director of nursing or university lecturer and professor.

Those interested to practise nursing must possess a suitably accredited academic qualificat­ion and practition­ers have to attend various courses and programmes on a continuous basis for skill enhancemen­t.

At Management & Science University (MSU), the Bachelor Degrees and Diploma in Nursing are comprehens­ive programmes offered by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS).

The opening of the MSU Medical Centre – a private specialist hospital – will provide opportunit­y to MSU nursing students for job placement.

Blending technical vocational education and training (TVET) with traditiona­l academic curricula, MSU enhances competenci­es with industry internship, community and creative entreprene­urship, as well as global exposure – empowering MSU graduates with the well-roundednes­s desired and sought after by employers.
