Tips for caregivers
Create a journal
Create a journal or diary that can be used to explain the situation to person living with dementia (PLWD). Use it to record new memories with PLWD too.
Set a daily routine
Set a daily routine for PLWD to engage in meaningful activities:
> Morning: low-impact exercise (simple movements) or dancing, depending on PLWD’S pace/ability
> 1-2 times daily: reading (or being read to), singing, music, simple chores (meal preparations), hobby sessions
> Afternoon: traditional games (mahjong), board games and puzzles (Monopoly, Scrabble, Sudoku), art & crafts, baking
> Weekends: Family together time
Dementia proof your home
> Remove anything that may cause trips or falls such as carpets
> Install handrails for bathrooms/toilets
> Make sure bedroom/bathroom doors can’t be locked from inside (or key is accessible)
> Hide keys to front/back door at night
> Ensure gas tank is off when kitchen is not in use
Make legal and financial plans
Make sure legal and financial plans are in place after diagnosis so PLWD can participate. Seek assistance from attorney specialising in elder law and financial advisor familiar with elder or long-term care planning
Use community resources
> Adult day
programmes
> In-home assistance
> Visiting nurses/nursing aides
> Meal deliveries
Be an educated caregiver
As the disease progresses, new caregiving skills may become necessary. Some associations offer Dementia Care Skills (DCS) workshops to help the caregiver understand and cope better with PLWD’S behavioural and personality changes.
Join a carers support group
Talk to other caregivers and care partners about any concerns, uncertainties, and challenges you face as a caregiver.
