Affordable Internet and device plans announced
THE Communications and Multimedia Ministry announced two affordable short-term plans – Malaysian Family Youth Package and Malaysian Family Device Package – to help users purchase smartphones and data for Internet access.
Its minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said in a statement the Malaysian Family Youth Package offers 20GB data for three months and can be used for all activities, including online gaming and downloading videos.
Priced at RM30 for three months, the prepaid plan is available to those aged below 21 and postgraduate students.
They will also receive an additional 1GB free daily but this data can only be used for productive activities such as e-learning.
Students under the age of 21 will be able to register with their Mykad while postgraduate students will have to use their student ID.
“The government has a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to the Internet at an affordable rate,” said Annuar.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Family Device Package will allow users to own a mobile device
that supports VOLTE (voice over LTE, or voice calls over 4G networks) for clearer calls.
Though the device will be offered for free, they will have to subscribe to a plan that starts from RM40, and will be contracted for 12 to 24 months, depending on the type of device and service chosen.
In an interview with the media at the launch event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said the packages will be offered through all telcos.
He added that users can opt for various models and plans with limited or unlimited data, depending on the packages provided by the telcos.
The registration for both the Malaysian Family Youth Package and Malaysian Family Device Package starts on Oct 15 and ends on April 15, 2022.
More details are expected to be announced later.
