A strong foundation in health science
THE STAR, THuRSdAy 5 MAy 2022
CHIROPRACTIC student at the International Medical University (IMU), Anthony Kho Nai Siong first started his journey with the institution as a Foundation in Science (FIS) student citing it as the best experience he had while studying at IMU.
“I am very blessed to have had my first two semesters conducted face to face fully.
“I would say that FIS in IMU was one of the best experiences I have ever had during my time studying at IMU,” he said.
He added that the transition from a high school learning environment to a university learning environment was gradual.
“Throughout FIS, we were taught on how to think critically and were always encouraged to discuss our ideas and answers in the classrooms. This can be experienced during our tutorial sessions and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions.
“Graduating from FIS, I realised that my command of English had improved tremendously. Modules such as English for Healthcare Professional (EHP) and Critical Thinking Skills prepared us with the level of English that is needed to complete assessments.
“Cross-Boundary studies also helped me to improve social skills, team working skills as well as communication skills,” he said.
Apart from academics, he added, IMU offered many clubs and activities that helped him connect with other students from various courses.
“This makes my university experience more interesting as I get to hear from other students what their course is like and see if a particular course is suitable for me.
“Another thing worth mentioning is the mentor-mentee system as this helped me to understand myself better. The system allowed me to feel that I have a safe space to share my thoughts and seek advice if ever needed,” he said.
He also extended his gratitude to his lecturers for all their work especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I would like to thank each and every one of the lecturers who made the classes interesting and interactive for us students, especially during this time of the pandemic. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. The values and lessons instilled in us have made a part of who we are today,” he said.
The IMU’s one-year FIS gives its students an early start to life as a degree student. Being offered and conducted in the same facilities and environment as the degree programmes, FIS students adapt to the facilities and environment at a much earlier stage.
Incorporating a holistic approach to learning in a university environment, the IMU Foundation in Science (FIS) programme prepares students to join the prestigious healthcare community of Malaysia’s first and most established private medical and health sciences university. It provides opportunities for students to interact with the academics, and gives them full access to IMU’s learning resources as well as exposure to the university’s learning methodologies.
The current IMU FIS team consists of carefully selected, qualified and experienced staff with specific skill sets that make them ideal pre-university level academicians.
The team has a clear understanding of subsequent undergraduate degree programme requirements and are assisted in this regard by degree-level academics who also advise the students on their available undergraduate pathways while in foundation.
IMU finds that it is vital for its students to be well mentored in respect to the exciting career pathways that the FIS programme provides.
The Foundation in Science has three intakes a year: March, June and August.
