COMPUTATIONAL intelligence

(CI) is a sub-domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and commonly known as the ability of computer systems to learn traits and perform tasks which require human intelligence.

At Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), the study and application of computational intelligence is intensified through its Centre For Computational Intelligence

(CCI) – one of the research centres of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FOCS).

The specific research projects in CCI are in fact final-year projects of undergraduate students with the focus on designing algorithms and techniques similar to the human way of reasoning.

Among the final-year projects are by Joan Hau and Lim Kah Yee on Intelligent Context Detection in Virtual Classroom. The students, who are currently pursuing their Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Software Engineering, are working on using facial recognition features as a new technology for tracking students’ attendance.

These features serve as communication tools for teachers in conducting their online lessons as well as to help them monitor students’ activities.

Another interesting and relevant research project is the Intelligent Visual Security Solution – Mask Detection and Face Recognition by two other Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Software Engineering students, Foo Jia Ern and Hiew Long Shun, who worked together with Advantech Co. Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a global leader in the fields of Internet of Things (IoT) intelligent systems and embedded platforms.

The students’ project focuses on deep learning-based features with masks and without masks for the face recognition process with the implementation of IoT devices such as Raspberry Pi.

The students have gained valuable experience and learnt important skills while developing their final-year projects.

“This is an exciting project, more so as we are working together with Advantech. We have the opportunity to use the company’s technology to enable alert messages to be sent to specific messaging platforms to notify the users with the relevant information picked up by our system. Working on this project has also broadened our exposure on how systems are developed and deployed in the industries and this knowledge will certainly give us an added edge in our careers,” Foo said.
