Two times the fun

- BY JAN LEE

IN K-drama Adamas, Ji Sung (pic) faces twice the acting challenge. He plays twin brothers who seek the truth about their stepfather’s murder.

Joining the drama are actresses Seo Ji-hye and Lee Soo-kyung.

The cast reveals four things you should know about the series.

1. Double the pressure

Ji may have years of acting under his belt, but Adamas (available on Disney+ Hotstar) still made him nervous. He plays twins – best-selling mystery novelist Woo-shin and prosecutor Su-hyeon – whose father was framed for killing their stepfather 22 years ago.

In an interview, the 45-year-old actor says: “They’re characters who look identical, but have different personalities. Portraying the subtle differences in their personalities definitely required more concentration on my part.

“I didn’t want to miss out on any detail, so I felt a bit of pressure.”

But the experience was a unique one. “The scenes with both Wooshin and Su-hyeon, where I had to run into myself, felt quite strange to shoot,” he adds.

2. Icy female lead

Seo, best known for romantic dramas such as Crash Landing On You (2019 to 2020), takes on a different type of role here.

The 37-year-old actress plays Hyesoo, the daughter-inlaw of a powerful businessman. And her husband’s family has ties to the murder of Wooshin and Su-hyeon’s stepfather.

She says: “Hye-soo has a mysterious aura. She’s an enigmatic character, which I thought would show a different side of me. Under her iciness, she hides deep sadness and desires.”

3. A meeting of worlds

Lee, 25, plays a passionate social affairs reporter who is pulled into a deep web of conspiracy. Her early scenes were primarily with Ji, so her first scene with Seo was a memorable one.

She says: “I really don’t have that many scenes with Ji-hye and it wasn’t until very recently that I acted opposite her. It felt like I was meeting someone from a completely different sphere in the drama.”

4. Grandiose setting

Given that much of the show revolves around Hye-soo, who marries into a wealthy family, Seo says the sets are a highlight of the series.

She adds: “Most of my scenes were filmed in a grand mansion and I think the ambience of that mansion captures the essence of Adamas very well.

“It has a very graceful, very grandiose vibe to it. I’m excited to see how it turns out on screen.” – The Straits Times/asia News Network
