Prasarana makes two key appointments

Appointments made to strengthen organisational structure and facilitate turnaround plan

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has announced some key appointments to strengthen its organisational structure and facilitate its turnaround plan.

After announcing Datuk Mohamed Hazlan Mohamed Hussain as its new president and chief executive on Monday, the public transport system operator said yesterday it has picked Ang Yoke Kee as group chief operating officer (strategy and transformation) and Muhammad Nizam Alias as group chief operating officer (operations).

Mohamed Hazlan was previously group director of organisational support at DRB-Hicom Bhd. In a statement, Prasarana said the three-man executive team had been appointed by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to undertake changes in the organisational structure and turn around the asset owner and operator of public transport systems and services in major cities in Malaysia.

Prasarana, which falls under the MoF, recorded a loss of RM2.5bil on a revenue of only RM846mil last year.

The revenue was mainly from the sales of tickets and other ancillary services such as advertising space on trains and in bus stations.

In steering the group towards improved performance, Mohamed Hazlan said Prasarana would focus on three key areas – increasing the ridership of public transport services; enhancing the management and delivery of quality services, and improving the management of revenue and cost.

In his message to the employees of Prasarana group yesterday, Mohamed Hazlan hoped that the 10,000-strong staff of Prasarana would rally closely behind him and the new management team; working together in support of fresh initiatives and programmes.

Meanwhile, Ang, a Masters degree holder in Financial Engineering from Carnegie Mellon – National Technological University, brings with him an extensive regional investment and consulting experience with Boston Consulting Group, Softbank and McKinsey to help transform and turnaround the company.

“It’s a tough journey ahead, but with the support and commitment from everyone, I’m confident that we will transform into a stronger and more resilient organisation that delivers quality public transport services to the people,” Ang said.

On the other hand, Muhammad Nizam, a graduate of Monash University who is currently pursuing his PhD in Islamic Finance with INCEIF, returns to Prasarana with the responsibility to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.

Nizam previously served as a general manager in the Prasarana Group managing director’s office, after stints in the Renong Group and POS Malaysia.

“I have always had high regards for Prasarana and its mandate in providing public transport connectivity and mobility for the people. It is indeed a noble job and one that is an ‘ibadah’ for the ummah,” said Muhammad Nizam.
