Carlsberg appoints Chor as chairman

-

PETALING JAYA: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd has appointed Tan Sri Chor Chee Heung as chairman of the group effective June 1, following the resignation of Datuk Toh Ah Wah from the role as chairman and independent non-executive director.

“Following the appointment, Chor will also take on the position of member of the nomination and remuneration committee and member of the audit committee,” the brewer said in a statement.

Chor, who was a member of Parliament between 1990 and 2013, has held several senior ministerial positions since the year 2000.

Before the year 2000, he was the parliamentary secretary for the Transport Ministry between 1995 and 2000, and a permanent member of the Asean inter-parliamentary organisation conference representing the Malaysian parliament from 1990 to 2000.

He has held positions such as deputy minister of home affairs and deputy finance minister from 2000 to 2009, chairman of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Malaysian Parliament for two years from 2000.

He was the minister of housing and local government from 2010 to 2013, said the statement.

Before entering the political arena, Chor practiced law from 1981 to 1992, and he was called to the bar at the honourable society of Lincoln’s Inn. He obtained his professional barrister-at-law in 1978 and his masters of arts in business law in 1990, according to the statement.

“I am honoured to be appointed as chairman of the Carlsberg Malaysia group,” Chor said, adding that he admires the dynamism and resilience of the group, its committed people and innovative brand portfolios in both Malaysia and Singapore.

“I strongly believe in the group’s purpose of Brewing for a Better Today and Tomorrow, and look forward to supporting the group in driving its growth momentum in line with its SAIL’27 strategy and sustainability priorities,” he added.

Toh resigned after contributing five years to the group as he plans to devote more time to pursue his personal interest, said the statement.

Toh, who joined the group in May 2017 as a independent non-executive director, was appointed as chairman in April 2018.

“Under his chairmanship, the group has navigated the unchartered waters of Covid-19, as guided by its corporate strategy of SAIL’22 and elevated the people agenda with greater diversity, equity and inclusion as well as internal talent developments,” it added.

“I am pleased that I’m handling over the chairmanship to Chor as his distinguished career with the government of Malaysia in the past and his vast experience in the corporate world will steer the group forward, as 2022 is the year of transition to a new fiveyear strategy, SAIL’27, which will begin in 2023,” Toh said.
