Cops: PKR knows terms

But party veep Surendran denies meeting discussed conditions

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have produced “evidence” to show that PKR leaders are aware of the 10 conditions set for the Free Anwar 901 rally.

City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamad Salleh showed a letter signed by PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Amin outlining the 10 conditions and photographs of the meeting where Shamsul signed the letter.

“There should not be any doubt that the organisers were fully aware of the conditions when they left after the meeting with us on Friday,” he told a press conference yesterday at city police headquarters yesterday.

DCP Mohamad said the 10 conditions were discussed and agreed upon with PKR deputy president Azmin Ali on Friday, adding that they were then drafted and signed at the Sentul police headquarters on Saturday.

The police, he said, were fully prepared to take action if the protesters did not heed the agreed terms.

He also advised protesters against bringing children to the rally as it could be dangerous.

“Although it is their right to bring whoever they want, I would advise them not to bring children as you never know what could happen if there is chaos,” he said.

On Friday, Azmin told reporters that the outcome of the meeting with the police was fruitful and no conditions were set.

Following news reports about the 10 conditions, he issued a statement on Saturday, saying the organisers would stick by the agreement they had with DCP Mohamad.

“I wish to stress that PKR will adhere to the agreement with the Kuala Lumpur city police chief, which was announced after our joint meeting on Friday.

“The agreement did not touch on the conditions which were announced later by PDRM (the Royal Malaysian Police),” he said.

PKR vice-president N. Surendran, who was one of those present during the negotiations with police, also denied that the meeting had touched on the conditions.

“The signature referred to by the police is that of Shamsul’s to confirm that he has received the letter,” he said, adding that it was not about agreeing to the conditions.

He said the party had not agreed to the conditions although the police did raise issues such as crowd control and public safety.
