A golden spin on CNY lanterns

JOHOR BARU: Lanterns have always been a staple decoration for Chinese New Year, and this year revolving ones with embossed gold designs are a big hit.

Daily Save shop attendant Rainnie Leong Su Chin, 24, said the pretty lanterns and their intricate designs were special.

“The lanterns are sold for RM388 per piece but this has not stopped many from buying them,” she said at her outlet in Taman Sentosa here.

Leong said the lanterns were in varied shapes and sizes but the rotating version was the most popular.

“The lantern itself is made of red plastic material and has several light bulbs inside,” she said.

“It is connected to a motor which when plugged into a power outlet will cause the lantern to slowly revolve.”

She added that the lanterns were made in China.

Leong explained that the gold embellishments on the lanterns featured prosperous symbols such as pineapples, fish and Chinese characters meaning good luck and happiness.

“Of course, we have lanterns adorned with gold-coloured dragons,” she said, adding that they were also popular because the new year will be the Year of the Dragon.

Other than locals, she said Singaporean customers were also attracted to the lanterns.

“For those who do not like flashy gold designs, we have other types of lanterns including those wrapped with silk, felt and even lace materials,” she said.

Leong said large lanterns as wide as 100cm were also the craze this year.
