SELANGOR, in an effort to regain their lost supremacy, have started early preparations for the Malaysia Games in Kuantan, Pahang in July.

Selangor, settling for the second overall spot for the past three Malaysia Games since 2009, will be organising the Selangor Games (Sukses), starting today, to identify talents for the games in Kuantan.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim launched the Sukses, involving a total of 20 sports in Shah Alam recently.

“Selangor have been second for sometime. Now, the time has come for Selangor to regain the top spot,” said Abdul Khalid.

“The Sukses will be an ideal platform for the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) as well as the respective state sports associations to identify new talents.

“They will undergo a systematic training programme for the Malaysia Games. The selected athletes should show excellent commitment in training and be well prepared for the Malaysia Games.

“Not winning the overall title at the last three games should not discourage our athletes. Instead they should be motivated to strive for excellence,” said Abdul Khalid.

The 20 sports in Sukses are shooting, wushu, football, hockey, athletics, volleyball, archery, sepak takraw, karate, silat, petanque, cycling, taekwondo, lawn bowl, aquatics, gymnastics, sailing, badminton, bowling and weight lifting.

Fourteen sports will competed among the nine districts– Petaling, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, Gombak, Klang, Sepang and Sabak Bernam – while the remaining sports will have individual participation.

Abdul Khalid said the local authorities have been given the responsibilities to provide the venues for the events.

“We are thankful to the local authorities for playing an important role in the promotion and development of sports in Selangor,” he added.
