Hisham: No more phantom voters with Alis
KUALA LUMPUR: The Agency Link Up System (Alis), launched last December, can address the issue of phantom voters, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said.
The Home Minister said its implementation could also improve and update all data on the Election Commission’s (EC) electoral roll, in line with the suggestion made by the Parliamentary Select Committee for Electoral Reforms.
“Alis, besides simplifying the process of applying for burial permits and death certificates, involves sharing of information between the National Registration Department and eight other government agencies, including the EC and the Royal Malaysian Police,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Hishammuddin hoped that with the system in place, it would put an end to allegations of phantom voters.
“Through Alis, a report on the death of a voter would be channelled to all the agencies that share the information online, and this would assist the EC to update its electoral roll by removing the names of those who have died,” he said.
Previously, the EC had to obtain the death certificates of a voter from his or her next-ofkin before the name is deleted from the roll.
“With Alis, the next-of-kin need to only lodge a report at either the police station, hospital or with the local authorities to obtain the burial permit and death certificate.” — Bernama
