MORE than 1,000 people turned up to collect the 1Malaysia People’s Welfare Aid (BR1M) last Saturday at SMK Puchong Jaya A.

Officers from the Implementation and Coordination Unit from the Prime Minister’s Department and Inland Revenue Board were on hand to distribute RM500 each to the successful applicants.

Puchong MCA chairman Datuk Wong Hock Aun, who is also Kinrara state liaison officer, said about 3,000 applicants were scheduled to receive the aid throughout the weekend in Kinrara.

“They could cash the vouchers immediately from the counters set up by Maybank.

“We also helped those whose applications were rejected, to fill in appeal forms,” he said.

Judging by the overwhelming response, Wong proposed to the Government to reduce the subsidy on petrol, sugar and rice to continue giving out aid to the poor.

He added that more people would receive aid in the fourth and fifth batches.

Puchong parliamentary liaison officer Datuk Loo Yeng Peng said the money given to the Puchong residents would promote economic growth in the township.

The Puchong Gerakan chief added that about 15,000 applications from Puchong had been approved.

Housewife Gowree Jothi, 35, said she was happy to receive the RM500, which she would use to buy school items for her children aged 13 and 10.

Tengku Mustafa Murad, 72, on the other hand, will buy medicine with the aid.

“I was diagnosed with stroke three years ago,” he said.

Meanwhile, a grinning Lee Ah Han, 86, said she would save the money and “spend it slowly”.
