Debate an eye-opener for the people, says Kong

ALOR SETAR: The debate between MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has given the Chinese community the opportunity to understand more about politics and the stand of both parties.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said a debate provided direct responses from debaters, thus giving the people better feedback on the issues raised.

However, Kong said the true objective of the debate between both leaders was not achieved as Lim did not answer the questions put to him.

Kong said a debate was a better platform than the social media in terms of providing the masses an insight into politics.

He was speaking to reporters at the opening of the Kedah Road Transport Department headquarters in Jalan Suka Menanti here.

The Rm59.45mil complex, built on a 9.2ha piece of land, began operations last December.

It replaces the former one in Mergong, which was frequently hit by flash floods.

At another press conference, Kong, who is MCA secretary-general, said the party had shortlisted potential general election candidates for Kedah.

“However, the Prime Minister will have the final say,” he added.

When asked if those who lost in the 2008 general election would be allowed to contest for the same seat, Kong said it would depend on the constituents.

On another matter, Kong said more than 60% of fatal accident cases in the country involved motorcyclists and their pillion riders.

“Although we have increased our safety campaigns and enforcement, it is the drivers’ attitude that can reduce accidents,” he said.
