IT WAS a fun-filled finish at the end of the five-day 28th Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) rhythmic gymnastics championships at SJKC Yuk Chai in Petaling Jaya recently.

Following the more competitive atmosphere in the individual disciplines in the first four days of the meet, the youngsters executed their routines in flawless fashion in the group exercises.

MSSS rhythmic gymnastics technical chairman Keoh Lay Khuan praised the competing teams for pulling off more convincing performances during the recent competition.

“They were definitely stronger because we allowed them to form combined teams representing the district and training centres (including the two training centres from Serdang and Shah Alam). They showed better coordination linking up their moves. Previously, the school-based team found it difficult to field a balanced team because they could not assemble gymnasts of similar ability in their lineup,” she added.

In the keenly contested emerging gala for the Under-10 age-group, Klang emerged as the winners chalking up 30.292 points for a narrow victory.

Petaling Utama settled for second with their 30.217 points while Hulu Langat A came in third (29.942).

However, Petaling Perdana flexed their strength and ended their fruitful outing securing the top spot in the overall standings.

Petaling Perdana accumulated a total score of 149 points to emerge as the overall champions ahead of Hulu Langat (122) while Klang and Petaling Utama were third (98) and fourth (90) respectively.

Petaling Perdana trio of Iman Iskandar Chan, Loh Chooi Joy and Au Wei Ran provided the joy with their domination to emerge as the individual overall champions in their respective categories.

Runaway individual overall winner Wei Ran completed her run with a clean sweep by bagging all four individual events — hoop, ribbon, ball and clubs — in the senior category.

Meanwhile, Iman and Chooi Joy overcame the stiffer head-to-head challenges from their Petaling Perdana teammates for their individual overall victories in the pre-junior and junior sections respectively.

Iman collected three golds (freehand, ball and ribbon), one silver (clubs) and one bronze (hoop) while her teammate Izzah Amzan was victorious in the two other disciplines.

Chooi Joy won the ribbon, ball and clubs event and had to settle for second behind Shak Yuki in the hoop.

The top four performers from each category — pre-junior, junior and senior — from the recent meet have earned their places to shoulder Selangor’s challenge at the upcoming national schools (MSSM) outing in Malacca from March 14 to 17.

Lay Khuan said they were banking on their pre-junior gymnasts to rise to the occasion in their bid to improve on their runners-up finish in the overall standings.

“We have a very strong line-up with Iman and Izzah offering healthy competition as they are pushing each other to do well in the prejunior category. Our junior and senior entries are also capable of putting up a fight against the serious contenders. It will be great to make a breakthrough. We want to go one up and accomplish our aim of finishing as the champions in the overall standings,” she added.
