Wanted – secretary with zest for human rights

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Suhakam is hiring a secretary outside the civil service for the first time.

Its chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam said Suhakam wanted “someone who has a passion for human rights, apart from expertise in administration and finance”.

He added that recruiting their own secretary was in keeping with the practice of other national human rights institutions.

Hasmy was thankful to the Government for seconding three officers to Suhakam to act as secretary since it was set up in 2000.

“We are grateful to them for the good job they have done with assisting the commissioners in promoting and protecting human rights as mandated under the Suhakam Act.

“There has been no attempt of which I am aware of by the Government to interfere but now, we can look for a candidate with the attributes that we want,” he responded on whether Suhakam had advertised for the position so that it could operate more independently.

“Suhakam has always been independent and it is time to be seen as being independent, too.”

The closing date for applications is March 9 and the successful candidate, who should be less than 55, is expected to start work in June.

Hasmy said the salary for the fiveyear contract would be equivalent to the civil service Premier Grade C (Jusa C).

It is understood that the lowest on the scale is about RM10,000 in addition to allowances.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Honours Degree or equivalent qualification, a minimum of 15 years’ experience in administration and finance and a high professionalism with expertise in human rights.
