BUTTERWORTH: The days of long queues at 71 Puspakom centres for vehicle inspection will be a thing of the past under the new Inspection by Appointment system being introduced nationwide.

Puspakom chief executive officer Hisham Othman said the system, introduced two weeks ago, had reduced the waiting time at Puspakom centres nationwide to just over an hour.

“We introduced the new system after carefully studying the complaints and feedback from our customers to overcome the hours-long waiting problem,” he said at the Puspakom centre in Mak Mandin near here yesterday.

Under the system, vehicle owners can call any centre nationwide to make an appointment.

They will spend about 15 minutes in a queue and an hour for the inspection. Each centre can inspect up to 700 vehicles daily.

The system, which was initially introduced in seven centres including Wangsa Maju, Padang Jawa, Johor Baru and here, will be extended to other centres nationwide soon.

The Star had on July 13 last year highlighted that vehicles had to wait in long queues for inspection at the Mak Mandin centre.

Hisham said customers could plan their time for the inspection and need not engage middlemen.

He said those who came without an appointment would be given a date or be attended to immediately if there were no other vehicles.

He said Puspakom spent Rm30mil to buy modern equipment from France for an additional lane at 30 centres, adding that it was spending another Rm30mil to upgrade the toilets at the centres nationwide.

Previously, Puspakom operated under the first-come-first-serve basis with vehicle owners who waited too long being advised to return the next day.

Abdul Azmi Manap, 50, a worker at a used car agency who brought an imported reconditioned car after making an appointment, gave the thumbs-up to the new system.

“I have experienced waiting for six or seven hours for my turn. I welcome the positive change,” he said.
