Faulty pumps lead to floods

FOUR houses in SK 9, Seri Kembangan, were flooded recently during a downpour due to two malfunctioned pumps at Sungai Kuyoh.

Resident Hew Sook Fong, 37, said water started rising at about 5pm and they scrambled to move the valuables to higher ground.

“The water was nearly 0.6m high and subsided at about 6pm after the rain stopped.

“Fortunately, we didn’t suffer any losses,” she said.

Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah said the flood problem, which had troubled the residents for years, ceased happening after the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) installed the pumps in November 2008.

“They have to be activated manually to channel rain water from SK 9 into Sungai Kuyoh, which flows parallel to Jalam Kuyoh.

“It could not function during the downpour because rats had chewed on the wires,” he explained.

Ean Yong presented a cheque of RM200 each to the house owners whose houses were flooded last week.

He added that one of the pumps was repaired on Monday.

“I have two suggestions for DID— to change the pumps to automatic ones, and add rat prevention features to the pumps,” he said.

Previously, wires and batteries were also stolen from the pumps.

Ean Yong added that a consulting company was appointed by the Federal Government to conduct surveys in areas with flood problem in the Klang Valley.

“They were supposed to collect the residents’ views on how to tackle the problem.

“SK 9 was one of the locations they visited but we are yet to get any updates,” he said.
