THESE days, cafes which delight to the tastebuds and give service worth the service tax slapped on are a rare find.

Too often we go to eateries and are put off by the dining experience even before the food touches our lips.

Tucked away in Taman Desa is a humble place called the Star Cafe and Entertainment, where the focus is good food, good service and good entertainment.

Every night, a different live band performs in their entertainment corner, filing the establishment with a laid back, jazzy ambience.

Having been there for 26 years, they recently underwent a refurbishment in July, giving the place a comfortable modern yet organic look and feel.

With prices of the dishes ranging from RM10 to RM60, Star Cafe has dishes to suit myriad price brackets.

Their choice of seating also reflects that, with bar style high chairs and tables for a quick drink, comfortable lounging chairs for those who plan to stay for a while, tables outside for patrons who prefer to have their food with nicotine, and a dining area slightly set apart for those who appreciate their privacy.

Chef Chua Tin Min, the main chef at Star Cafe is Hainanese.

He was also the chief chef at the popular Coliseum cafe, Kuala Lumpur for over 50 years, and his assistant chef is armed with culinary experience of over 20 years.

The food at Star Cafe is a fusion of East meets West, with a wide variety of interesting dishes.

One of the dishes in featured in the new menu is French in origin, called Duck a’la Orange.

The duck is roasted, and accompanied by an orange gravy with a hint of Cointreau — an orange flavoured cocktail — to add a tangy orange flavour. The sweet gravy complements the tender duck well, an interesting variation to the traditional roast duck.

The Rainbow Trout Amadine is grilled, topped with browned almond and butter sauce and it comes with parsley and vegetables.

A dash of lemon adds a sour tinge to the butter sauce, a shock to the tastebuds.

Meat-lovers, especially those who enjoy beef will love the house favourite Broiled Tenderloin Steak.

Tender Australian beef is broiled to the diner’s preference. The meat is well-seasoned, not too salty but still infused with flavour.

If you can’t get enough of the beef at Star Cafe, the Fillet of Beef Wellington is also popular among the regulars at Star Cafe. A fillet of tenderloin is wrapped in delicious golden puff pastry stuffed with mushroom chicken and turkey ham. The pastry crunches in your mouth and goes well with the many flavours accompanying the beef, a filling and satisfying meal indeed.
