New Zealand to promote its culinary fare
THE New Zealand High Commission in Malaysia recently launched New Zealand Week, an event that will showcase exciting events focusing on education and science, apart from introducing the country’s culinary fare to Malaysians.
About 150 guests attended the event, held at New Zealand Residence in Jalan Langgak Golf, Kuala Lumpur, which kicked off with an opening speech by new zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia David Pine.
“With the theme Food for Thought, our focus is on climate change and food challenges going forward as it’s a global problem we all share.
“New Zealand Week aims to expand science cooperation between New Zealand and Malaysia as well as encourage more Malaysian students to take up science,” said Pine.
He added that the country will also promote halal meats, salmon, dairy products, fruit, confectionary, wine and green shell mussels.
The event also saw the Malaysia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce chairman Richards Tankersley presenting a mock cheque of RM520,000 to Christchurch mayor Bob Parker, who was accompanied by his wife, Joanna Nicholls Parker. The funds were contributed by guests present at the event for the building of the city.
Ever-popular celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, who was master of ceremonies for the evening, entertained guests with his jokes.
The food ambassador of Malaysia will also be creating special New Zealand recipes for the benefit of food lovers, which will be available on the website www.newzealand.com.
One should not miss the opportunity to taste New Zealand food, which will be featured at the Trader’s Hotel restaurants from now until March 18.
Guests were also thrilled with a special performance by The Trons — a rock robot group, invented by Greg Locke, who is a musician, artist and electronics engineer. This ecofriendly rock band is assembled from old bits and pieces of scrap, which uses an obsolete computer operating system to work.
Present at the event was Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, one of New Zealand’s most distinguished scientists. Gluckman was invited to give a lecture on Thinking About Food at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, apart from attending a panel discussion on climate change and food that was held recently.
