US university twins with HELP

-

HELP College of Arts and Technology (HELP CAT) is the only college in Malaysia to offer twinning programmes with a Tier 1 university from the United States.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in New Hampshire, US, was rated Tier 1 by the US World and News Report in September 2010.

US President Barrack Obama was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law degree by SNHU for his contributions to society.

Jorinn Chee Ka-yee, 18, communication major, said that she has no regrets choosing the SNHU programme @ HELP CAT.

“It’s more assignments based, and does not focus so much on exams.

“I am also the type who likes to go out to do things, and this programme allows me to do this as it has many projects. The time is also flexible and my friends and lecturers are great,” says Jorinn, who was awarded the HELP CAT scholarship for outstanding performance in co-curriculum activities.

HELP CAT Head of the Centre for SNHU Programs, Franklin Morais said the programme integrates a co-operative programme where students can opt for a four-month internship and earn up to 12 credit hours - equivalent to completing four subjects.

“Many students get employed by the companies they interned at. The experience also gives them an edge over others as they would have acquired the working skills and knowledge before they even graduate,” says Franklin. He added that these companies include IBM, Brandthink Asia and Top Glove, as well as a host of SMES and SMIS.

Students enrolling for degree courses at SNHU @ HELP CAT have to complete 40 courses (equivalent to 120 credit hours) within a four years’ time frame. The American Degree course features the co-operative program, faculty exchange and online learning. Online learning Of the 40 courses required to complete a degree at SNHU @ HELP CAT, two mandatory courses are conducted online. Students will be mentored by SNHU faculty in US and will be exposed to the online delivery method of education.

Online learning provides an opportunity for students to network with their local and international classmates using the online delivery method.

“There are many benefits of studying for a liberal arts degree,” explained Franklin.

“Students have to study a variety of subjects such as mathematics, history, philosophy, psychology, communication, information technology, languages, economics, business and politics to name a few.

“It gives them a wide grasp of the knowledge that is required to make sense of what is going on in the world and this becomes particularly helpful when students begin their careers.”

The SNHU twinning programme at HELP CAT is a 4+0 course where students will be awarded an American degree while completing it in Malaysia.

The programme allows students the flexibility of either completing their studies in Malaysia, or transferring to SNHU US, or other US universities. Transfer to other US universities is made simpler because SNHU students in HELP CAT are granted SNHU US transcripts.

The programmes offered at HELP CAT are:

•Bachelor of Science in Business

•Bachelor of Arts in Communication •Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
