The place to learn about business
IT’S the experience that truly counts. This is the personal testimony of SEGI Business degree student Guruparan a/l Vickneswaran, 20, leader of the champion team in the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) National Management Game last year.
“The college gives us students a huge amount of exposure, I would say from A to Z, to the business world. My lecturers are very experienced and constantly encourage us to join external competitions,” said Guruparan during a one-onone interview at SEGI College Kuala Lumpur.
Guruparan was leader of team Legion SEC, which beat other teams from the corporate sector in the finals to claim the championship in the MIM National Management Game.
They competed against corporate players like Ambank Group, Malaysian Green Technology and Yung Kong Galvanising Industries, beating 22 other teams. The National Management Game required participants to run a business for 24 hours in a virtual shopping centre. All participating teams ran the same type of shop and products. To qualify for the next round they had to achieve at least 40% in nett profit and 60% cash balance.
The SEGI-SEC (SEGI Entrepreneur Club)’s win in the MIM competition was just one of the feathers in its cap. Students from the club and college have won many other awards in external competitions over the years.
Guruparan reveals the secret to winning the competition, “It was teamwork and perseverance. We capitalised on each other’s strengths to overcome experienced working adults in competing teams. Even though we were initially the slowest, we overtook all of them in the end.”
”The amount of exposure and the experiences I gained here are priceless, thanks to my lecturers and the SEC at my college. The club is like a big family where we’re groomed to face the business world.”
”I’m really grateful to have chosen to study here because my lecturers are very dedicated. I can feel that they see our success as their own,” he added.
Before enrolling in the University of Greenwich BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance at SEGI College Kuala Lumpur, Guruparan was doing pre-ACCA course at Sunway College. His father, who works at Earnst & Young, recommended the programme to him and he gladly took it up.
”I am the only one from my school enrolled here, but I’ve made so many friends already. The study environment here is good and my seniors have been kind to me. I really respect them,” he commented.
