Producing all-rounders
TAR College’s School of Social Science and Humanities (SSH) has consistently built into its public relations programme curriculum the need for its graduates to be both employable and socially savvy.
TARC Advanced Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations) students had organised a Green campaign “Econnect”, a phone-recycling-cum-environmental awareness campaign in collaboration with Nokia in August 2010.
The Green campaign featured tips on energy saving, a green-themed marathon, a Greengrapher photo contest and a newly formed TARC Green Society, among other activities.
In 2010, the Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations) students organised a “We Give, We Share, We Care’ fund-raising event with numerous activities like car wash and a food carnival.
The sum of RM90,000 raised was donated to two schools in Peninsular Malaysia for renovation works, building of new IT labs and purchase of computers.
Last year the SSH students helped to raise funds for the disabled through cohosting two projects entitled “Heart of Art Exhibition” that involved the selling of art pieces and the “I love Charity Project for Beautiful Gate.”
Established since 1999, SSH presently offers over 30 programmes in courses such as Mass Communication, Creative Arts, Social Science, Hospitality Management, Language Studies and Nation Building.
The school has also produced outstanding winners in both international and local competitions.
Topping the winners’ list is the win by Pang Jia Wei, a second year diploma student in Multimedia Design in the 2011 International PLURAL+ International Jury, UNESCO IGUALADA and Gulen Institute Awards.
Beating 145 entries from 54 countries to win the awards, Pang’s 1Malaysia video captured the juries’ international call to young people for videos that propose creative solutions to develop peaceful and multicultural societies.
SSH’S Creative Arts students’ photos submitted for the OSK Calendar Art Competition were also selected for the OSK Property Calendar 2012.
From portraying homes as a pre-war building, a living outdoor museum to even a dream home on wheels, the winning photos endear many to the value that home is where the heart lies.
In addition, SSH students won the runner-up prize of RM5,000 in the 2011 Shell Fuelsave College Competition.
Students impressed the judges through a gimmicky display of a Hello Kitty plush toy in the back seat of a pink car.
“We put the Hello Kitty in the back seat to encourage people to car pool and decorated it with an ‘under the sea’ theme, exhibiting all the dos and don’ts of saving fuel,” said Kiang Chee Siong, a second year Advanced Diploma in Public Relations student.
Participation in competitions such as the STYLO 2010 and Hong Kong Young Designers Wedding Gown 2010 had also brought fame to SSH students.
SSH head Lee Hwee Chuin said: “We aim to provide an experiential and entrepreneurial platform for our fashion design students to show their creative talents and to relentlessly encourage them to participate in fashion shows and competitions organised by industry players and to immerse ourselves in Kuala Lumpur’s initiative to become the regional hub for fashion happenings”.
The students were challenged to match their fashion wear with the industry standards and also societal trends.
