Path to quicker graduation

-

THERE is a way for SPM leavers and Diploma holders to graduate earlier than their contemporaries. Matriculation leavers from government universities who somehow missed their degree programmes can also use this method to catch up with their course mates. This method simply requires you to enrol in the March intake at Multimedia University (MMU).

The March intake at MMU is the first of three every year.

It is followed by the June intake, which also happens to be MMU’S main intake of the calendar year, as well as the October intake.

Two factors set the March intake apart from the other intakes; the first is its timing.

The March intake takes place from late Dec until early March, before the annual announcement of the preceding year’s SPM results. As such, the intake is dismissed by far too many people who could actually benefit from it.

The second factor is the entry requirements.

While the entry requirements are identical to those for the other intakes, during the March intake the SPM leavers may apply using their SPM trial results. This allows smart and ambitious students to receive their conditional offers and become an undergraduate student ahead of their peers.

But, is it worth the trouble? For many, enrolling in MMU in March instead of June hardly seems like a big deal. It’s not as if the difference is a full year, or even half a year. Could a mere three months matter?

Yes, it is worth the trouble, and three months could matter. Students who begin their courses in March would finish their course ahead of the main batch in June. For foundation students, this means getting the first seats in popular degree courses before the majority of students come in. And that’s not even the best part.

The best thing about joining MMU’S March intake is that if you follow your course structure closely, you would complete your studies by the end of February. The beginning of the year is when the majority of employers do their hiring, as action plans are still being implemented and recruitment budgets are still fresh.

In fact, many generations of MMU students have capitalised on this fortunate timing. As they near the end of their course, they would drop by the MMU career fair – also held early in the year – to speak with prospective employers.

Even those who skip the career fair are often headhunted around this time of year. The results? Every year since 2005, more than 23% OF MMU students in their final year manage to secure employment before they even finished their final exams.

Since the ultimate objective of earning a degree programme is to gain employment, MMU’S March intake offers a benefit that is almost unmatched by any other intakes. It certainly makes the conditional offers made to March applicants worth it.

MMU’S method of nurturing its students by targeting high employability perhaps explains why MMU’S tracer studies have consistently revealed that more than 90% of its graduates secure employment within six months of completing their studies.

In recognition of MMU’S efforts, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, in its 2009 Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (Setara) placed MMU in the Excellent (Tier-5) rank. This firmly cements MMU’S position among the top universities in Malaysia.

Candidates are invited to apply to MMU for the March 2012 Intake in the fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Management, Creative Multimedia, Accounting and Bio-Informatics. For details, contact 013-6133 144 (Nalini), 013-630 6458 (Karen) or 013-630 6455 (Azlan).
