MANAGEMENT and Science University’s (MSU) involvement in the medical sciences areas is an initiative towards complementing the nation’s need for qualified medical personnel in Malaysia and the region. With the MBBS programme being offered at the main campus in Shah Alam and its off-shore campus in Bangalore, India, MSU looks set to be a major provider of medical education in Malaysia.

“There is no difference in the curriculum used at the main campus or our off-shore campus. However, the campus in Bangalore provides the opportunity for students to experience an international setting while they pursue the medical programme in MSU,” says MSU’S International Medical School (IMS) dean Professor Dr Normalina Mansor. She further added that “Our involvement in the Indian subcontinent is a part and parcel of our international effort at promoting the Malaysian brand of education to the international communities.”

Prof Normalina, who is an ophthalmologist, is optimistic that with the wealth of experience that she brings and together with her team of local and international faculty members, MSU is on the right course to be the university of choice for medical education and medical related disciplines.

This year, MSU will see its pioneering batch of medical students graduating. These young doctors will be absorbed into the various medical facilities throughout the country as part of their internship programame as required by the Malaysian Medical Council.

“We are confident that the training and exposure that these students have undergone are sufficient to prepare them for the real life medical settings.” Prof Normalina said.

“Becoming a doctor is not just about helping cure the sick. It about understanding the sick. Doctors must be able to communicate effectively with patients. Effective communication helps in the healing process,” added Prof Normalina. Students at MSU are exposed to various kinds of activities aimed at enriching their learning experience.

According to Prof Normalina, as part of its benchmarking initiative, MSU has linked itself with several international partner universities. Such links involve the mobility of students and staff as well as research in related disciplines. All these are efforts on MSU’S part towards making Malaysia a hub for educational excellence.

“Things are looking very positive for MSU’S further involvement in the medical field during the next few years. My team and I are looking forward to this and we are definitely very excited to be a part of this historic development,” says Prof Normalina.

Intakes for MBBS programme are in May and October and qualified students are required to sit for the Medical Entrance Test (MET) to determine their aptitude for the MBBS programme.

Other programmes offered at IMS are bachelor and diploma programmes in the area of medical sciences.
