THE University Gadjah Mada, Jogjakarta is the largest Indonesian university in terms of student population.

It is situated in the ancient city of Jogjakarta - a cultural and intellectual centre crammed with over 50 prestigious universities and academies.

It could be considered a student city with a friendly environment and affordable living costs, easy public transportation and harmonious surroundings.

Over the last decade, University Gadjah Mada has attracted thousands of Malaysian students to its hallowed halls - especially in the fields of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

The university has one of the largest populations of foreign students embarking on tertiary education.

University Gadjah Mada’s International Medical Programme was established in 2002.

This programme was initiated in response to the increasing global competition and international cooperation with foreign universities and hospitals.

Today, the largely Malaysian student population studying in its International Medical Programme are exposed to an innovative educational strategy centring on problem-based learning, integrated community oriented teaching and early clinical exposure.

The five-and-a-half-year undergraduate medical programme accepts about 60 to 70 qualified Malaysian students via a rigorous entrance examination.

Upon successful selection, these students are assisted by 259 faculty members, 65 of whom are PHD holders, 75 master’s degree holders and 71 specialists/ sub-specialists.

These faculty members are assisted by tutors to ensure optimum level of learning and teaching.

The Faculty of Medicine is ably supported by the 750bedded Sardjito General Hospital, Banyumas District Hospital and Dr Soeradji General Hospital.

Nugrahan Sdn Bhd is one of the two official representatives of University Gadjah Mada, Jogjakarta.

The university was ranked 103 in the world for Life Sciences and Biomedicine by the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings in 2009.

As one of the oldest universities in the Asean region with over 50 years of experience in teaching medicine, the Faculty of Medicine has collaborations in research, student exchange and programme evaluation with reputable universities such as the Maastricht University, Netherlands; Dutch Cancer Institute; Utrecht University; University of Melbourne and Harvard Medical School.

University Gadjah Mada also accepts Malaysian students into its five-year undergraduate dental programme, and four-year pharmacy and veterinary science programme — all are recognised by the Malaysian government.

Most interestingly, the cost of obtaining the degrees from University Gadjah Mada is purportedly almost half of private universities in Malaysia.

University Gadjah Mada will be conducting an Entrance Examination on June 9. Nugrahan would like to welcome all qualified Malaysian students to register as early as possible.

This would give ample time for students to prepare for the selection examinations - Nugrahan will forward past year questions, reading materials and conduct intensive revision classes for students who register.

To further encourage students, an Early Bird discount in the form of a RM500 voucher will be given to those who register for the Selection Examinations before March 31.

Due to the intense competition for places, students are advised to register early.
