Tweeting to woo young voters

-

JOHOR BARU: A local youth group known as JOHO will be using online social networking service Twitter to attract youths to register as voters.

The group, reputed to be a creative and active youth network-community, launched its Twitter handle – TWTUP Johor – at Danga Bay in the presence of over 1,000 followers.

According to the group’s project manager, Syed Faliq Fahmi Syed Farouk, 28, JOHO would also be launching its own Twitter account, @twitter_johor to create awareness among youths about issues such as the right to vote.

“We believe that the best way to teach youths the importance of voting and being registered as voters would be through Twitter as many have their own accounts.

“We have more than a thousand people, mostly youths, who follow our Twitter handle and we hope to increase our following,” he said.

He added that the main reason the Twitter page was created was to keep youths informed on issues in the state and country.

Syed Faliq said youths would also be told how their votes could shape the country’s future. He added that members are encouraged to voice their opinions on its Twitter page.

“We also hope to work with government agencies to enable local youths to be aware of all government events via JOHO,” he said.
