GTP targets on the right track

- By NOEL CHANG

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government Transformation Programme (GTP), which was introduced in 2010 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) as a catalyst to steer the country towards becoming a developed nation by 2020, has seen encouraging results from its various National Key Results Areas (NKRAS).

For the past three years, the Government has implemented projects and offered various aids to the poor, which includes pensioners, widows of uniformed personnel, taxi drivers and students.

The Government has also restored dilapidated homes as well as constructed new housing units that were affordable to the people, especially those from low-income households and in rural areas.

Public transport has also been significantly improved as indicated in the significant rise of ridership statistics.

Rising global food prices have been staved off by the subsidies made by the Government to cushion the impact to those under the low-income category.

Basic food items were made available at lower prices at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia outlets, allowing savings of up to 41% on products sold there.

Medical facilities were also made mobile and available right at the doorsteps of the people through the Government’s introduction of the 1Malaysia clinics that are available throughout the country to provide medical services, especially in rural areas.

The Government has also implemented the 1AZAM programme that is aimed to train and help potential entrepreneurs from the lowincome category start up their own businesses.

The initiatives of the Government are intended to fulfill the needs of the people in line with the “People First, Performance Now” maxim of the Prime Minister’s 1Malaysia concept, especially in view of the three major concerns affecting the public: economy, job security and spiraling food prices.
