DAP to stay out of PSC on Lynas
PETALING JAYA: DAP will not participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the Lynas rare earth plant, said party secretarygeneral Lim Guan Eng.
In a statement, Lim said the party would propose to the Pakatan Rakyat leadership not to allow Barisan Nasional to use the Opposition’s presence in the committee to “legitimise a Lynas plant”.
“DAP will not participate in a PSC on Lynas rare earth processing plant, which serves to deliver a fait accompli by endorsing the Lynas plant and forcing public acceptance without any due regard for safety, environmental and health concerns,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Lim said DAP would suggest for Pakatan not to take part in the committee, adding that it would be a waste of the party’s time if the PSC could not decide on the project.
In Kuantan, anti-lynas group Himpunan Hijau called for a boycott of the committee with its chairman Wong Tack urging all MPS and NGOS not to participate, describing this as “irrelevant and unnecessary”.
“For more than a year, responsible citizens of Kuantan have shown the strongest objections on the project. Yet, the authorities have continued to show no concern,” he said.
Himpunan Hijau had organised a rally on Feb 26 to demand the closure of the plant currently being constructed in Gebeng.
