Drb-hicom Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil has been appointed Proton Holdings Bhd’s executive chairman and executive director.

KUALA LUMPUR: Drb-hicom Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil will helm Proton Holdings Bhd’s leadership as its executive chairman and executive director.

Khamil, 56, who has been DRB Hicom managing director since 2006, would immediately replace Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh who had resigned last Friday as part of the terms agreed upon when DRB Hicom acquired Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s 42.74% stake in Proton.

“Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil is appointed as executive chairman of Proton upon completion of the acquisition of Proton by Drb-hicom Bhd on March 16,” Proton said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia.

Khamil joined Drb-hicom as deputy group chairman on July 19, 2005 and was promoted to deputy group managing director on Oct 28, 2005.

His appointment is widely speculated to be beneficial to Proton with observers saying that he was the most suited person for the job in an effort to revive Proton back to its glory days in this new era.

Earlier reports had also quoted Khamil as saying that he would bring further improvements to the present management to add new faces and retaining some old faces to ensure continuity within the company.

He had earlier said that he would take a thorough review of the Lotus Group and aimed only for the best for Proton and that he had no plans to rebadge any type of car as this would “result in the automotive industry moving backwards.”
