Top scorers do college proud
STUDENTS at UCSI University’s A-level Academy recently achieved new heights of excellence for the January 2012 GCE A-level Examination, as 106 of them, from the April and July 2010 intakes received at least one A among the subjects taken.
One of the top achievers obtained 5As for all five subjects, followed by two students who earned 4As, 18 students with 3As* while another 53 students earned 3As.
Hyun Bin Bae, who achieved 1A* and 3As, was pleased with her results.
“I am happy with my results, as I put in a lot of effort and hard work.”
The 19-year-old is planning to further her studies abroad in the field of medicine.
Ruel Abbarow, the top scorer of the cohort with 2As* and 3As, was also satisfied with his results.
“I am glad to have achieved this, and hope to apply for a scholarship for the pharmacy programme at UCSI University,” he says.
He also adds that the A-level programme at the university has been wonderful, with a very good and specific syllabus.
“The lecturers are also extremely nice and helpful, giving us guidance whenever we need it.”
Abbarow advises anyone who is planning to join the A-level programme to focus in class as enough is taught according to the syllabus. His peer, Kung Khai Shien concurs. “The A-level programme may not be easy, but if one thinks critically and asks questions when in doubt, scoring is highly achievable.”
UCSI University’s A-level Academy which offers the London Examinations Modular GCE A-levels by Edexcel International is fully recognised by the United Kingdom Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulations.

Focusing on mathematics and science, the Alevel Academy prepares students for careers in some of the world’s most highly-demanding and prestigious fields.
The quality of the London Examination Alevels offered at UCSI University is assured as the lecturers regularly attend workshops organised by Edexcel International, as well as participate in online forums to continuously improve teaching their subject areas and ensuring students personalised attention.
To assist students weak in their studies, these lecturers regularly conduct remedial classes on a one-to-one basis.
Thus, UCSI University A-level programme has an excellent record with a high percentage of passing rate where most of the students pass with flying colours.
In addition, all the A-level students have the opportunity to experience not only the well-equipped science laboratories, but also learning beyond the classroom from the field trips and various other outings arranged.
According to Dr Nalina Thurairajah, deputy head and senior lecturer at the university’s A-level Academy, most of the students are planning to continue their studies at UCSI University.
“They will be applying for the university’s upcoming intake in July. I hope the students will continue to study hard, as nothing comes easy in life.
“I hope to see all of them in a few years, as first class honours students when they graduate with their degree.”
For more than 25 years, UCSI University has been debating the issue of what constitutes education.
Seeking to redefine convention with its Praxis University approach, it encompasses a pedagogy that blends both workplace and classroom in a creative fashion.
In a nutshell, UCSI University brings the best of both worlds: the academic and industry experts under one roof.
