Managing atopic dermatitis
A TOPIC dermatitis is a common problem for young children, but it can be managed. It is a common skin condition, which usually begins in childhood.
Atopic dermatitis commonly affects 20% of children from birth to seven. It is commonly seen in children with asthma, sensitive skin and allergy proneness.
There is no cure for atopic dermatitis but for some, it can subside indefinitely when they attain adulthood.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition whereby the skin becomes dry, red, extremely itchy and inflamed. Constant scratching further damages the skin and may impact the child’s quality of life and development.
Some children have a mild form characterised by dry, itchy patches and minimal redness. More severely affected children have widespread areas of redness and skin breakdown due to the scratching and crusting.
Scratching damages the skin and makes the itch worse. A vicious cycle develops – itching leads to scratching which leads to skin damage, and which in turn leads to more itching and to more scratching. This is often called the “itch scratch cycle”.
The fragile skin loses too much moisture, allowing the skin to become very dry, thus damaging its protective barrier function.
Take steps to avoid further irritation. Showering or bathing a child in warm water can set off an itchscratch cycle.
It is helpful to avoid the use of soaps or bubble bath, which dries out the skin. Use a soap-free cleanser instead. After bathing, apply moisturiser immediately.
The key management in atopic dermatitis in children is to treat and moisturise. This is to ensure the skin moisture is restored which facilitates healing.
Moisturising will prevent the skin from being dry and itchy. Moisturisers help the skin to regain its moisture level, facilitate healing and restore the important barrier function of skin. This will stop further drying and irritation.
