SHAH ALAM: When a convoy of armoured trucks arrived at the Carlsberg brewery here, one could be forgiven for thinking that a billion dollar transaction was about to take place.

However, the prize was worth way more – the Euro 2012 trophy.

Made of eight kilogrammes of sterling silver, the Henri Delaunay trophy is irreplaceable.

Carlsberg Malaysia marketing director York Spencer was chosen to “greet” the arrival of the trophy, which was surrounded by four armed guards.

The moment he got his hands on it, the New Zealander raised the trophy and kissed it as if he had won the European championship.

The tournament would be played in Poland and Ukraine in June. “I feel victorious!” he quipped. Spencer said Carlsberg had been associated with the tournament for seven years and hoped to continue being a part of the event.

“Two lucky Malaysians will have the opportunity to shake hands with the man-of-thematch of the semi-finals in Ukraine, ” he told The Star.

Danish goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel will be in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday to promote Euro 2012, but Spencer kept tightlipped on the details.

Football fans will be able to view the trophy at Sunway Pyramid today and tomorrow from 10am to 10pm.

“We’ve gone through a lot to get UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) to allow us to bring this in,” Spencer said.
