JOHOR BARU: Eating out has been a less costly affair for patrons of restaurants which offer the 1Malaysia People’s Menu (MR1M).

“Before MR1M, I had to spend about RM10 a day on my meals, but now I can save about 50%,” said Mohamad Abu Majah, 26, who works with a housing developer.

One such eatery is a mamak restaurant in Bandar Baru Uda here.

“This restaurant has become my number one choice to eat as my work place is just within walking distance and the price is reasonable compared to other restaurants nearby which usually charge me more than RM7 for a plate of rice with meat and vegetables,” he said.

He said MR1M had helped him save when eating out, adding that his savings could be used for other expenses.

MR1M was launched in July last year with the aim of helping people reduce their daily expenses. The list of places which offer MR1M is available at www.1pengguna.com.

Technician Abdul Rahman Mohd Said, 20, said restaurants which offered MR1M had become his top choice.

Citing an example, he said lunch which consisted of rice, vegetables and fried chicken for three people costs only RM12.

“Other places would charge us more than RM20,” he said.

Retiree Idris Meluru, 60, said he was grateful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for introducing MR1M.

“There are now wider options for us to buy food at a lower price,” he said.

A worker at Restoran Habib, Ismail Muhammad, 38, said the number of customers had gone up by about 40% since it introduced MR1M.

“Most of them are schoolchildren who come here for breakfast before going to school. Our place is also packed during lunch time,” he said.

There are at least 50 restaurants in Johor which offer MR1M.
