WORLD Glaucoma Week’s aim is to increase the awareness of glaucoma – the second common cause of blindness.
Glaucoma is generally a disease of the eye, where the pressure within the eye rises due to some resistance to the outflow of fluid, causing optic nerve damage. These are not tears that are formed by the glands above the eyelids, but the fluid that is found inside the eye.
In some glaucoma cases, the pressure remains normal but there is progressive damage of the optic nerve. If the disease is left untreated, the patient may eventually lose his vision entirely.
Regular eye examination is the best preventive measure against glaucoma. Early detection enables the person to get the disease treated with fewer complications. Although eye drops for glaucoma are easily available, it is advisable to visit a specialist centre to get a proper prescription from the ophthalmologist. Think of it as antibiotics – overdosage can be harmful to your body.
