The designer behind Lady Gaga’s fashion controversies
THEY met in 2009 when Nicola Formichetti, infatuated with pop icon Lady Gaga’s image and music, decided he wanted to collaborate with her.
Named as one of the most influential forces working in fashion by the Business of Fashion in 2010, the halfItalian, half-japanese art director arranged a photo shoot with her for V-man magazine, and describes their first meeting as “instant love”.
It is a love affair that has given birth to many controversial fashion moments – the infamous meat dress Lady Gaga sported at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as the egg-hatching act where the pop star emerged on the red carpet of the 53rd Grammy Awards from a shell in a yolk-coloured latex outfit.
Formichetti was in Singapore to showcase French fashion label Mugler at the opening night of the Audi Fashion Festival 2012.
The 34-year-old has been Mugler’s creative director since 2010.
He also heads Voguehommejapan, designs for Uniqlo and is fashion director for almost all of Lady Gaga’s appearances, music videos and concerts.
He also recently set up a pop-up store “Nicopanda Invasion” at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong.
