Spurs must get tough with Modric again, says Mullery

-

LONDON: Spurs chief Daniel Levy has been urged to get tough with Luka Modric again over the summer.

Modric and Gareth Bale are expected to assess their future after Tottenham were dumped into the Europa League by Chelsea’s amazing win against Bayern Munich.

Croatian ace Modric, 26, wanted to leave last year but Levy held firm.

And White Hart Lane legend Alan Mullery said: “The situation is the same as last season but Luka is under contract.

“I don’t see why Levy would be anything but as resolute as he was then.

“The chairman has been there before and I’m sure he’ll be there again.

“Gareth is still a young man learning his trade and has lots of years to play in the Premier League, with Tottenham or somewhere else. “But I don’t think he will leave.” Real Madrid will take advantage of Tottenham missing out on the Champions League by bidding for Modric.

The Spanish champions are reportedly preparing an offer of £25mil for the Croatian star.

Madrid will fund the move by offloading Kaka to Paris SaintGermain.

Spurs rejected a bid of £40mil from Chelsea for Modric last summer but face another fight to keep hold of him this year.

The London side were denied a place in next season’s Champions League when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on Saturday to lift the trophy.

Although Tottenham value Modric at over £30mil, Madrid are prepared to offer Lassana Diarra in part-exchange.

Modric will decide his future after Euro 2012.

Meanwhile Louis Saha and Steven Pienaar were caught up in a Twitter storm on Sunday after congratulating Chelsea on their dramatic Champions League win.

The win meant that Spurs – who finished fourth in the Premier League – will not play in next season’s competition.

But despite having to make do with Europa League football again next season, Saha and Pienaar praised their London rivals.

The tweets quickly drew a backlash from furious Spurs fans, who responded in their droves with anger.

“You two don’t belong at Spurs with your “well done Chelsea” tweets. You’re a disgrace to our club,” a fan tweeted.

“We pay your wages and you say well done Chelski!?!” posted one fan.

And another tweeted: “Your entitled to your views but why express them in a public forum in front of millions of Spurs fans? Keep to yourself.” — Agencies
