KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Kamung Baru had a pleasant surprise when Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak visited the nearby shops during a function here.

The Prime Minister was here to give away 36,000 packets of bubur lambuk to the people in conjunction with Ramadan.

Najib later walked around and met the shopkeepers at the area’s Ramadan bazaar.

Sugarcane seller Mohd Fadil Taib, 39, said that he was caught by surprise and felt honoured when Najib came to his stall.

“I was speechless when he stopped to chat with me. He asked about my business and how it has been going. Najib is truly the rakyat’s Prime Minister,” he said.

Mohd Fadil said he and the traders were earlier informed that Najib was only scheduled to distribute the bubur lambuk at the Kampung Baru mosque.

Roti John seller Mohd Sazali Ahmad, 29, was happy that he could shake hands and talk with Najib.

“It means a lot to us when leaders like him come to us and ask about our problems and issues. The only time we can see him is on the television screen,” he added.

Masjid Jamek committee council chairman Datuk Idris Shaari said the Prime Minister had always given his personal contribution to provide bubur lambuk to Kampung Baru residents.

“It has been part of our annual activity. We have prepared 100 pots of bubur lambuk,” he added.

Earlier, Najib performed Asar prayers at the mosque before helping to distribute the dish.

Among those who joined him were Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk ahmad phesal Talib and Federal Territory Barisan Nasional leaders.
