Chinese support to also feature prominently at general assembly

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Preparations for the general election and support from the Chinese community are expected to feature prominently at the MCA general assembly tomorrow.

With preparations for the elections entering the last lap, party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is expected to give delegates a checklist on the do’s and don’ts to win the “war”.

Topping the list are party unity, hard work, team spirit and adopting a people-friendly approach.

He is also expected to list out the election gimmicks by Pakatan Rakyat and ways to counter them.

Barisan Nasional chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would open the one-day AGM to be held at the party headquarters in Wisma MCA here.

Meanwhile Puchong delegate, Lee Chee Leong, 38, said the party should be vocal about issues and attacks by the Opposition and be firm in its stand.

Jasin delegate, Chew Chin Seng, 40, felt that the AGM, almost certainly the last before the coming general election, would be the best platform to give everyone another confidence boost.

Nonetheless, the party should not lose focus on the basic issues, such as those on education, said Tan Chai Yee, a 38-year-old delegate from Bukit Gantang.

Benta branch Wanita chief Tan Lay Hoon, 60, hoped that the party could seriously address the issue of a lack of young, energetic and highly educated members to contribute to the party.

Wendy Lee, 68, from Gerik, said the party should also focus on issues such as the lack of job opportunities in rural areas, which saw the young leaving for the city in droves, adding that an ageing population was a cause for concern in villages.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said the main topics for the AGM would be on fighting crime, housing for youths and preparations for the general election.

He said the delegates would also discuss matters raised in the Auditor-General’s report.

Dr Wee said a resolution to reject the Opposition’s political ideals, including the implementation of the hudud law, would also be tabled and discussed.

He said a total of 16 resolutions would be tabled at the one-day AGM.

The MCA Youth AGM to be held in Wisma MCA today would be opened by deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, while the Wanita MCA AGM in Berjaya Times Square would be opened by party secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
