Pos Malaysia pays tribute to its postmen in historic move
KUALA LUMPUR: Come rain or shine, the postman always delivers no matter where you are, yet his efforts have never truly been recognised – until now.
Pos Malaysia Berhad, under which these postmen work, has for years come up with first-day covers honouring various other professions and events, but never them.
All these changes will be displayed on Monday.
The company has decided to finally pay homage to the postmen, featuring them in the various uniforms they have donned over the past 60 years, via its latest stamp and philatelic designs.
The long overdue tribute is to mark World Post Day on Oct 9.
Pos Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Khalid Abdol Rahman said the designs were a tribute to Malaysian postmen.
“This is the first time in Pos Malaysia’s history that we are issuing a special collection of stamps featuring the types of uniform worn by our postmen from the colonial era till modern times,” he said.
“The different uniforms mark the changing times in our history,” he added at the launch of the new designs at Pos Malaysia headquarters here yesterday.
Among the uniforms depicted on the stamps are the durable khaki of the 1950s, the brown-coloured uniforms worn in the 1970s and the light blue ones donned in the 1990s.
Stamps featuring the uniforms in the 1950s, 1970s and 1990s are available in denominations of 60 sen, 80 sen and RM1 respectively.
First-day covers with stamps and first-day covers with miniature sheets are priced at RM2.90 and RM3.50 respectively, while special edition folders are sold for RM5.50 each.
Full sets, including three 20-piece stamp sheets, first-day covers with stamps and a miniature sheet and a folder, are available at RM62.90 each.
The limited-edition stamps and philatelic items will be sold at all post offices nationwide on a firstcome-first-served basis.
Pos Malaysia has been introducing new thematic feature designs annually since 1969 to mark World Post Day.
