KUALALUMPUR: Cutting a Malay and Mandarin album while working on your PhD may sound a bit complicated but it’s a cinch for actress and former beauty queen Soo Wincci.

Her ambition to crack the Taiwan music market and, at the same time maintain her presence on the local scene and pursue a doctorate in business administration may appear like a difficult juggling act.

But the 26-year-old Soo said she was determined to make it all work with some “sacrifices.”

The Miss World Malaysia 2008 winner, who was recently seen in the much-acclaimed Celebrity Master Chef reality show, said she was elated when a song from her yet-to-bereleased Mandarin album was chosen as the theme song for an upcoming Taiwanese drama series.

“I will be releasing the Mandarin album soon, now that one of my songs has been chosen for the drama series,” she told mStar, the Malay news portal of The Star.

Soo said that after three years in the local arts scene, she was ready to venture into the Taiwanese market but this did not mean she would forsake the local entertainment industry.

“I am ready to build a name in Taiwan but I also aim to further broaden my following on the local scene.

“At the same time, I am completing a thesis for my PhD programme in business administration at the Open University Malaysia (OUM),” she said.

With a law degree and a Master’s in business administration, she received a scholarship from the OUM in 2010 to do her doctorate, which she expects to complete by 2014.

On the “sacrifices” she has to make, Soo said she had to do with little rest in her daily routine and stay away from any romantic relattionship that could throw her off balance.

“With my growing career and a PhD to work on, I have to stay focused. Sometimes I only get two hours of sleep a day.

“My ex-boyfriend broke up with me last year as he could not accept my lifestyle, and I definitely do not have time for any romantic relationship at the moment,” she said.

Meantime, Soo’s mini-Malay album was released last month, with four songs, including Nombor 1, Jangan Risau and Musim Asmara.

Another song, Terus Teranglah, features local hip-hop star Joe Flizzow.
