Engage youth using new media, urges Liow

THE use of social media like Facebook and Twitter has intensified in the run-up to the general election and MCA Youth must not miss the opportunity of using this tool to reach out to the people, said MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said it was important to use social media to keep the youth informed of Barisan Nasional’s efforts and policies which were of benefit to the people.

“The political arena is full of talks and discussions on current issues and we must be able to react fast, especially on issues which are detrimental to the party,” he said when opening the 48th MCA Youth annual general assembly at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Liow said the use of new media had also posed a big challenge to getting the youth to be involved in the nation’s development.

“Bombarded by all sorts of information, the youth tend to be influenced by unconstructive ideas.

“They become emotional and unable to differentiate between what is true and what is meant to incite hatred,” he said.

He said there was a need to correct the perception that the voice of the youth had been ignored by political parties.

Liow said the Opposition was allout to undermine the people’s trust in the Government, regardless of the country’s interest.

“A chaotic situation will be conducive for the Opposition to fish for votes,” he said, adding that they were capable of doing anything to wrest power.

Liow said the DAP was willing to be the “main broker” for PAS which was bent on implementing its brand of hudud if the Opposition came to power.

“DAP’s modus operandi is to confuse the people with all sorts of terms, and cheat the people by saying that PAS will not be able to realise its aim to implement hudud,” he said.

Liow said the DAP was the main culprit in inciting hatred among the people, and this could ruin the country’s political system.
