Yu: Chinese will only face strife under hudud

-

CHINESE voters will only face strife and challenges if they accept hudud law, warned Wanita MCA chief Datuk Yu Chok Tow.

She said if hudud was passed in Parliament, Malaysia would “say goodbye forever” to being a secular nation.

“In the next general election, if Chinese voters convey the message that they can accept hudud, it is only strife and challenges that await the community,” she said in her keynote address at the 37th Wanita MCA annual general assembly.

She said religious academicians and legal experts had often stressed that the implementation of hudud would destroy the country’s diversity, although PAS and DAP had stressed hudud would not be imposed on non-Muslims.

“A country with two models of legal standards will only serve to create serious legal conflicts,” she added.

She called on Wanita members to spread the message on the strife that can be caused by hudud.

On United Chinese School Committee Association (Dong Zong) accusing MCA for not fighting for Chinese education, Yu said it was a grossly unfair statement.

She said MCA would never betray Chinese education, adding that the party had worked very hard for its development.

Yu also said the recent court judgment which bound over two men for statutory rape had caused discontent among the public.

“Whether or not an underage girl agrees to sexual relations, it is a question worth exploring. The ruling will set a precedent that allows criminals to escape punishment for committing rape against underage girls, thus, negating rape prevention efforts,” she said.

On public safety, Yu said people did not feel safe although statistics had showed a declining crime rate.

MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said DAP would have “sinned” against the Chinese community if it helped PAS with its plan to turn the country into an Islamic state.

PAS, he said, had been consistently fighting to introduce an Islamic state and implement hudud law.

“DAP opposed it initially. However, it has slowed down and has since become silent,” he said in his speech.

Kong challenged DAP to reveal its common policies agreed with its Pakatan members.

“Why has PAS never stopped emphasising on hudud? Is it part of the common agreement?”

Kong accused DAP of misleading the public by saying that they need not be afraid of hudud if they did not break the law.
