MUAR: The country has been put on high alert for floods during the rainy season, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said all the relevant departments have been directed to be prepared for the possibility of floods following warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

“All the departments have been directed to ensure their logistics related to floods are in the state of preparedness,” he said after launching Johor’s education and entrepreneur carnival in Pagoh yesterday.

He said the Welfare Department was also asked to ensure that there was enough food in all their depots in the country.

“The weather has been very unpredictable lately. All the relevant departments must remain on alert,” he added.

Earlier, Muhyidin, who is also the Education Minister, said students should be encouraged to use standard spellings in their written school work as many had started using abbreviations that are used in SMS messages and Twitter.

He said social media had a strong influence on the young and he did not want the languages taught in school to be polluted by the new trend.

On politics, Muhyiddin who is Umno deputy president said the guidelines on what constituted acts of sabotage would be distributed to all divisions.

He said acts which were considered as sabotage under the guidelines included contesting against Barisan Nasional candidates in elections, funding opposition candidates or campaigning for the Opposition.

Earlier, while speaking at a meeting with factory workers from the Pagoh Industrial Area, Muhyiddin said the Opposition’s promise of a RM1,100 minimum wage was not something that could be implemented even if they came to power.

He said no investors and industries would want to come to Malaysia if they had to pay their employees such high salaries.
