GEORGE TOWN: Local songbird Yise Loo and MY FM deejay Wayne Phoo lent star billing to a walk along scenic Gurney Drive to raise awareness on the plight of impoverished children.

Some 250 people took part in the 5km fund-raising stroll yesterday organised by World Vision Malaysia (WVM) under its Hands Up For Children campaign.

The early morning walk ended at Gurney Plaza, where an exhibition was held on the campaign which seeks to give children as well as their families and their communities a sustainable future.

This is mainly done via WVM’s child sponsorship programme.

The funds are pooled and used to provide the children access to education, healthcare, food, clean water, as well as economic and agriculture development.

Under the programme, Malaysians can sponsor children from marginalised communities in other parts of the world and give them a brighter future with a monthly donation of RM65 (child from Asian countries) or RM80 (non-Asian countries).

A child sponsor, who gave her name as Loo, shared her experience of visiting her 13-yearold beneficiary in Tua Chua, a village in Vietnam.

“Her father kept thanking me, saying that if I had not sponsored her, she would probably have been married off and would not have received any education. “It brought tears to my eyes,” said Loo. For more information about the campaign, visit www.worldvision.com.my or call 03-7880 6414.
