Of a singular style
Fashion brand Fred Perry continues its homage to the late star’s signature look in the latest Amy Winehouse Foundation collection.
INher heyday, Amy Winehouse made a definite impression on the masses. Her dishevelled beehive hairdo, black cat-eye makeup and retro-style outfits created a distinctive look. The singer may have had her ups-and-downs during the span of her successful career but her personal style has never wavered, even a little bit, in this aspect.
Her look could be said to be an appropriation of a past retro glamour, but in all fairness, the singer is solely responsible for making it a renowned style in more current times. After all, her many musical accolades – initial nomination for a Mercury Prize and subsequent wins for the BRIT Awards and Grammy Awards, have put Amy in the eye of the international music industry and hence, a firm placement as an icon around the world.
British heritage brand Fred Perry, with permission from Winehouse’s family, is continuing a capsule range of products that will be true to her style, and is now releasing it for the Autumn/Winter 2012 season. A seasonal contribution from this collection will bemade to the Amy Winehouse Foundation (a charity established to help struggling young people).
This will be the fifth collection for Fred Perry with Amy Winehouse but a first where the star does not have a direct hand in its designs. Winehouse first collaborated with the brand for an Autumn 2010 collection, which was then followed by a Spring/Summer 2011, Autumn/Winter 2011 and Spring/Summer 2012 collection.
The first collection looked to her signature 1950s style with a modern preppy twist, her second highlighted a Hawaiian theme with regards to colour, fabric and detailing, and the third returned to a colour palette of black, white and grey in addition to Houndstooth as a patterned highlight. The fourth then referenced the singer’s love of vintage 1950’s Americana and art deco Miami where retro highwaisted shorts, argyle knits and a bustier dress appeared in gentle pastels.
This particular collection however, is a recreation of key styles from past collaborations. While there are new pieces to look out for amongst the tonal leopard prints, slim cut pique shirts, longline jumper dresses and scarves, staples like the recognisable silk knitted polo shirts and silk knitted cardigans, have also appeared as returning favourites. The brand describes the range as “very typically Amy; sexy, stylish and individual.”
Fred Perry’s Amy Winehouse Foundation Autumn/Winter 2012 pieces start from RM489 for a polo shirt and RM879 for a jacket. The collection is now available at both of the brand’s Fred Perry Authentic store (Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Suria KLCC).
