Worthwhile trip for colouring champ Alini

-

A schoolgirl’s seven-hour car trip from Pasir Gudang, Johor to Kuantan just to take part in a colouring contest paid off when she won first prize.

Seven-year-old Alini Balqis Azizul had earlier missed a chance to take part in the contest organised by the popular children’s education magazine Kuntum and Dutch Lady when it stopped by her hometown in Johor, so she and her mother decided to travel to Kuantan to make up for it.

“She did not even expect to win this. It looks like our seven-hour drive up here was worth it,” said Alini’s mother Shamsuriah Saari, 40.

The student from SK Kopok Pasir Gudang is no stranger to colouring contests as she had taken part and won a lot of prizes since she was five years old.

Alini was in Kuantan last week for another colouring contest and won first place as well.

“I don’t even know how many contests she has taken part in. Her time during weekends is all used to take part in colouring contests. Our home is full of prizes and seven bicycles she won,” said Shamsuriah.

She added that Alini, who won in the Category A segment, had been taking art classes for only three months.

Category B winner Low Xue Qi, 12, said her love for art drove her to do her best.

“I am just happy to win because this is what I like to do,” said the student from SJK(C) Pei Chai.

Alini and Low were among some 1,200 schoolchildren who took part in the contest themed “Fun Exploration with Kuntum and Dutch Lady School”.

Dutch Lady distribution manager Khoo Yen Seng and Kuntum editor Asma Saad gave away the prizes.

The contest was organised by Kuntum, which is published by Star Publications (M) Bhd, and sponsored by Dutch Lady.
