Teachers join youth squad
Volunteers sign up for MIC programme to help more in need
KUALA LUMPUR: Despite juggling between career and family, tuition teacher N. Ushasilvaraj still finds time to be a volunteer in aid of the needy.
Having been involved in voluntary work for several years in Penang, she is ready for more.
Ushasilvaraj, 44, is among the many who have registered under the newly set-up MIC Youth Squad to help the people.
“We are not doing this to gain popularity. We just want to do our best to help the poor.
“I focus a lot of my work on the lower income group in Seberang Prai, but I wish to help more people,” she said yesterday.
Another teacher, T. Subashini, 24, said the MIC’s Youth Squad initiative would provide a platform for youth who had a zest for voluntary work.
A factory worker, who wanted to be known as Sargunam, 33, said the programme also provided youth with the necessary information about opportunities given by the Federal Government to improve their livelihood.
“Previously, many youths interested did not know where or how they could get involved with voluntary work. Now all they need to do is register under the Youth Squad.
“Many Indian youth, especially in the estates, can now get information on how to get business loans to start their own businesses and studying opportunities through the programme,” he said.
MIC Youth chief T. Mohan said any youth from any university or NGO who wanted to volunteer can register as a member, adding that could register their names on the party’s Facebook or Twitter page as well as at the MIC headquarters.
