Ipoh tourism riding high

Scooter owners’ convoy promotes state as a choice destination

IPOH: More than 340 SYM scooter owners got together for a gathering tailored for fans of the popular two-wheelers.

The day-long event, known as Gegar Ipoh, saw the participation of the owners from all over the country.

SYM Owners Gegar Ipoh chief coordinator Jaspal Singh said the event was to make Ipoh the destination of choice among scooter enthusiasts.

“It also allows scooter owners to get to know one another better,” he said.

Beginning at Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir’s official residence, the owners then formed a convoy and took their machines on a 40km ride across the city centre. They passed through Tambun, Tanjung Rambutan, Jelapang and Chemor.

Dr Zambry, who sportingly took part in the convoy, said more than 90% of the scooter owners were from other states.

“Their participation will help promote tourism in the state, especially as this is Visit Perak Year,” he said, adding that the number of participants had multiplied two-fold compared to the previous year.

Among the enthusiasts was Mohd Azhar Hamid, who came in his three-year-old 200cc scooter.

The 38-year-old Ipoh City Council employee said the convoy was a good way to explore places as “spare parts are not too expensive”.

“There are many scooter clubs in the country, so there is no reason for a lack of activities,” said Mohd Azhar, adding that he had travelled as far as Cambodia on his scooter.

The convoy made its final stop at Gunung Lang Recreational Park where Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim hosted a barbeque for the owners.
